A genuine sanctuary giving rescued captive wildlife lifelong, individual care, never trade.
About Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS)
PAWS, the Performing Animal Welfare Society, rescues captive wild animals and gives them lifelong care at its sanctuaries in California.
For more than forty years, PAWS has worked to end the exploitation of captive wildlife. Animals used in entertainment, kept in unsuitable conditions or left without options when facilities close often have nowhere to go, and PAWS exists to give them a permanent and dignified alternative.
It describes itself as a true sanctuary, which carries a clear meaning: it does not breed, buy, sell or use animals for commercial gain. Instead it offers spacious, natural habitats where animals can behave as they would in the wild, with care shaped around the history and needs of each individual.
The sanctuary is home to more than 250 rescued animals across species including elephants, tigers, bears and monkeys. Alongside this hands-on care, PAWS campaigns and educates to challenge the industries and attractions that keep wild animals captive, including through its long-running international conference on captive wildlife.
Lifetime sanctuary care is a serious, lasting commitment, and these animals will never be returned to performance or profit. Support helps provide their food, veterinary care and habitats, and strengthens the wider push to end captive wildlife exploitation for good.
