Restoring the Water Cycle to Help Central Portugal Withstand Wildfires
A community-led project is regenerating landscapes so they hold water better and stand up to fire.
In central Portugal, a project called EcoAtivo is taking a hopeful approach to one of Southern Europe's toughest challenges: wildfires.
Rather than fighting fire with fire, the initiative is working to bring water back into the landscape.
By regenerating the natural water cycle, the project aims to make the land more resilient and better able to resist the flames that have become more frequent and intense in the region.
Decades of land mismanagement, combined with a changing climate, have left parts of Southern Europe especially vulnerable to fire.
EcoAtivo's response is rooted in restoration — helping the land recover its ability to hold and store moisture, so that healthier, wetter ecosystems can slow the spread and severity of wildfires.
The work is being carried out through Ecosystem Restoration Communities, an Ecoflix partner that supports locally led projects rebuilding damaged landscapes around the world.
It is a reminder that the tools to face a warming world are often already present in nature itself.
When water returns to the soil and vegetation, the whole system becomes stronger and more able to withstand pressure.
