saving orangutans through education and scholarships that build lasting conservation capacity in Indonesia
About The Orang Utan Republik Foundation
The Orang Utan Republik Foundation works to save orangutans and their rainforest home through education, scholarships and the people who share their forests in Indonesia.
Orangutans are being pushed to the edge. Deforestation, the spread of plantations, illegal logging and the trade in young apes have stripped away the forests they depend on, leaving Borneo's and Sumatra's red apes with shrinking, fragmented habitat. The foundation argues that without local champions, no amount of outside concern will turn this around.
Its answer is to invest in Indonesian people. Rather than working against communities, it builds knowledge and commitment from within, running conservation education in schools and villages and reaching the wider public with awareness campaigns that explain why orangutans and their forests matter.
At the heart of this is the Orangutan Caring Scholarship, which helps Indonesian students study and step into conservation careers, alongside fellowships, mentoring and recognition such as the Pongo Awards. The foundation also presses for reform in the palm oil sector so that production stops costing orangutans their lives.
This is a long game. Forests protected and a generation of Indonesian conservationists trained will outlast any single campaign. Supporting this work helps fund scholarships, classroom programmes and the steady, patient effort of changing minds where it counts most.
