Wolfdogs Offer a Path to Connection for Young People

A youth programme is exploring how rescued wolfdogs can support mental health and wellbeing.

When Fairuz Azra was 17, she was searching for connection as a high school student. She found it in an unlikely place: alongside wolfdogs.

Her experience is at the heart of the work of Wolf Connection, an Ecoflix partner, which pairs rescued wolfdogs with young people to support mental health and personal growth.

The programme, based in Palmdale, California, brings together animals and people who each, in their own way, are looking for belonging.

For Fairuz, that sense of connection came through time spent with the animals, an experience that speaks to the potential of these relationships to help young people feel understood.

The story was featured by Spectrum News 1, which explored the question of whether wolfdogs can help with mental health issues.

Wolfdogs are animals that often struggle to find a place, being neither fully wild nor conventional companions. By giving them a home and a purpose, the programme also creates opportunities for the young people who work with them.

It is an approach rooted in mutual care, where healing flows in both directions between animal and person.
