Rescued bears and elephants kept warm through the Indian winter
Heated shelters, adjusted winter diets and extra bedding for the sloth bears and elephants in its care.
As temperatures dropped across northern India, Wildlife SOS moved swiftly to ensure the rescued animals in its care were ready for the colder months ahead.
Sloth bears and elephants at the organisation's facilities received a range of seasonal adjustments designed to keep them comfortable and healthy through the winter period.
Extra bedding was laid down to insulate resting areas, heated shelters were introduced to take the chill off enclosures, and diets were tailored to reflect the animals' changing nutritional needs during cooler weather.
Particular attention was paid to the oldest and most vulnerable individuals. These animals were monitored closely throughout the season, with staff alert to any signs that the cold was affecting their condition.
Wildlife SOS, an Ecoflix partner, works year-round to rehabilitate animals rescued from exploitation and distress. Seasonal care of this kind forms an essential part of that ongoing commitment, requiring the team to understand each animal's individual circumstances and health history.
Both sloth bears and elephants need thoughtful management as temperatures shift. The preparations reflect not just practical knowledge, but a genuine attentiveness to the wellbeing of animals that have often come from difficult and traumatic pasts.
The work serves as a reminder that rescue is only the beginning of a much longer journey. Providing a safe and comfortable environment through every season — including the sharp chill of a northern Indian winter — is central to giving these animals the stable, supported life they deserve.
