Ground broken for coastal whale sanctuary in Nova Scotia

Officials, community members and Indigenous representatives gathered to mark the start of work at the sanctuary site.

A milestone moment arrived on Friday afternoon, 19 June, as work formally began at the site of a new whale sanctuary.

Elected government officials, representatives of the Indigenous Mi'kmaw community, local residents and special guests came together for the occasion.

They joined members of the Whale Sanctuary Project, an Ecoflix partner, to mark the groundbreaking.

The gathering brought together the many voices that have supported the project, reflecting a shared commitment to giving whales a more natural place to live.

Bringing local communities and Indigenous partners into the heart of the effort is central to how the sanctuary is taking shape.

A groundbreaking is an early but significant step, signalling that plans long in the making are moving from vision towards reality.

For a project of this ambition, seeing people stand together at the site is a hopeful sign of the progress to come.

The day celebrated not only the work ahead but the collaboration that has made it possible.

It is the kind of moment that turns years of planning into something tangible on the ground.
